Point Yamu by COMO, The Perfect Island Getaway
Impeccable service right from the time you step onto the premise and to the time you depart. That is what is expected at any COMO Hotels and Resorts. A recent visit to Point Yamu by COMO in Phuket Thailand sealed my love for this luxury chain. Located at the tip of Cape Yamu overlooking the Andaman Sea and limestones karsts of Phang Nga Bay, Point Yamu is the perfect island getaway.
Paradise is a short 25 mins drive from the Phuket International Airport and the theme is Mod Thai with a touch of tradition. The interiors are done by Italian design talent Paola Navone and offer a unique expression of contemporary Thai luxury, combining COMO's signature lines with the relaxing tones of aquamarine and pops of reds and oranges.

We were initiated into Christina Ong's vision of luxury firstly through the sense of smell. Guests are first refreshed by the cold towels scented with Invigorate, the signature Como scent, a blend of Eucalyptus, Geranium, Lavender and Peppermint. Throughout our stay, we were soothed and calmed by this aroma in our individual baths, by the pool, and also at the Como Shambhala spa.
Stepping into our Bay View Room, we were greeted by 45sqm of sunlight washed space in blue and turquoise accents. Perfect for the #whiteaddict here. The windows open out to views of the bay and sea, allowing one to enjoy a sunrise or sunset view.
Of course a vanity bathroom for him and her with separate toilet and rain shower. One can also opt for the bath tub in the other room categories. The adjustable spotlights and the 1600w power hairdryer were godsent! The men have no idea how we struggle with those weak blowers typically available. Dang i'm spoilt.
Well, that's what we're paying for in a luxury resort isn't it- their ability to anticipate all our needs. It begins with the simplest thing like charging your electronic devices (you know how we can't live without that). No travel adapters are required at COMO, it's plug and go. There are also ample power points everywhere- in the yoga studio, the gym, by the pool. They must know that all that Instagraming would take up lots of juice. The unintrusive twice daily turn down service, while expected, was still a nice touch. Bottles of drinking water are always available, things are always placed where you need them (slippers by the bed), curtains adjusted for optimal lighting, lounge music when you return to your room at night, together with a little sweet for you.
On your other needs- Beach/resort necessities at the shop if you require; children can be relegated to the children's play room where they have free space to roam while you partake in other adult activities. A full range of complimentary daily activities provide guests with options other than suntanning, lounging, and eating. Excited? You can check out the Point Yamu's activity schedule here.
The COMO brand is one that is associated with wellness and yoga is a key feature. This yogi parked herself in the studio for the daily pilates/ hatha/ ashtanga classes and then spent more time doing self practice. All you need is to bring your yoga gear and yourself. Mats, towels, water and apples are provided.
The well equipped gym with Life Fitness machines will work your muscles if you need something more intense. You could get private fitness or yoga sessions should you wish.
Or if you prefer to be outdoors, bike tours around Point Yamu with a sports instructor will bring you on a 10km (1.5h) climb around the tip. We went on the road, passed through a little village, cut through a watermelon and a rubber plantation, did a pit stop at a soon to be developed beach by Como and ended back on the pier, where a van picked us up to spare us the agony of climbing up 4 ginormous slopes.
Snorkeling and diving excursions off the nearby remote islands are also available all under the guidance of COMO’s English-speaking guides.

If sedentary is more your thing, then perhaps a change of sun-tanning location with a twice daily complimentary beach excursion, courtesy of COMO. That's if you must have sand between your toes. Otherwise, floral origami, garland making, or an arranged cooking class could be good options too.
Of course, we do not go to a resort to stress ourselves with a ton of things to do, so do make time for doing nothing at all. Well, i chose to park myself, semi-submerged, in the shallow end of the 100m infinity pool with magazine in hand. You can also do so with a drink in hand (highly recommended). The staff are always on the standby to provide you with iced water or a cold face towel. You could also get some bites from the bar.
You could also take a dip in the hydrotherapy pool located at the COMO Shambhala Retreat. It's a prime spot for lounging should you wish to avoid the sun. For a more indulgent treat, pop right back to the spa where you can be kneaded into a relaxed slumber in one of the 8 private rooms. I enjoyed every bit of the signature COMO Shambhala massage (75mins) which uses the Invigorate massage oil. The skillful therapist was very mindful of my tickle spots and i actually drifted into oblivion of happiness and that's a feat for me. End off with a steam bath or dry off in the sauna, or just lounge by the pool again (these are accessible to all guests).
Of course, the food is a key reason why i was drawn to Point Yamu by COMO. Indulge in the fiery southern Thai cooking at Nahmyaa (it's our fav) or feast on the breakfast spread or hearty Italian at La Sirena. A healthy COMO Shambhala Cuisine is also available at all COMO hotels and resorts and can be enjoyed in any of the restaurants, the bar, or in your room.
It began with the COMO scent and ended with that as well. The eucalyptus and peppermint scent continued to soothe me with their lingering aroma on my flight out of Phuket, reminding me of the great stay we had at Point Yamu by COMO. Yes they have my heart now. Sorry Alila Villas. I've booked my next COMO retreat already.
