Singapore Airlines A350 Business Class SIN-BCN
I've tried several Singapore Airlines Business Class products and have been waiting to check out the A350-900 Business Class design since it was rolled out 2 years ago. I originally thought i'd be able to check out the then new design on my SIN-NRT flight but they did not retrofit that particular SQ B777-300ER. I finally managed to do so on our honeymoon by taking the twice weekly non-stop SIN-BCN flight on SQ and then another flight from Barcelona to Casablanca. The honeymoon travel posts will eventually come (2 years later).
We all know that the A350 is a new generation aircraft and i thought that the flight experience is a lot more comfortable than the other aircraft- it's quieter and the air feels less drying, so yes, tech works.
There are 42 Business Class seats in a 1-2-1 seat layout. As you can tell, the seats are generous in size, though not as huge as the older designs. But hey, even if you're a big dude, the 60" seat pitch and 28" seat width beats many other airlines offering out there.
The Scottish leather seat can be adjusted to your comfort with the numerous buttons to play with. There are two new seating positions—the Lazy Z, a cradling position that ensures your weight is centered and balanced when you’re sitting down, and the Sundeck, a lounging position that extends the base and foot of your seat so you can stretch and rest your legs on the ottoman.
The seat also transforms into a 78" flat bed when you're ready to snooze and it comes with a cushioned headboard, complete with linen, duvet and pillows. This is why i love taking SQ business class on long-hauls. The side lights were very useful for reading under different conditions, be it sitting upright, in-bed, or lounging. I don't think Jr was too bothered by my light as it didn't spill that much into his cabin. Also, there are also 2 earphone jacks, for sitting and lying down. I thought that is a very thoughtful design!
I really enjoyed the 18-inch IFE monitor because i watch a lot of movies onboard. The tv is controlled by a touchscreen controller at the side, which came in handy especially when i was lying on the bed.
For the power hungry folks (you workaholics), all your necessary ports and points are available at the side panel too.
The business panel features a power adaptor, along with two USB ports, HDMI out, and an iPod plugin.
Some storage space is located at the arm rest area, under the touchscreen controller. You'll find your noise-cancelling earphones inside. I didn't try putting a laptop in, so i'm not sure if it fits but it was roomy enough for my toiletry, camera (not dslr), and water bottle.
Other small storage compartments are next to the tv, perfect for smaller personal items. There's a coat hanger as well. Larger items can be stowed under your seat. I also appreciated the vanity mirror which allowed me to freshen up my makeup before disembarking.
I quickly settled into the flight with some bubbly, which helped me with some hard choices i.e. what movies to watch.
The inflight dining options didn't look that exciting when i browsed it before our flight, so Book The Cook it was. I decided to give the beef steaks a go this time, partly because i've ran out of things that i wanted to try on the SQ BTC. I went with the Japanese Chargrilled Soya Beef, served with vegetables simmered in mirin, and Shimeiji mushroom rice. This meal is designed by Singapore Airlines International Culinary Panel Chef Yoshihiro Murata.
Medium rare it wasn't but the meat was still relatively juicy. I love Japanese food and it was a winning combination of flavorful stewed greens and a sticky mushroom rice.
Jr went with the 6 oz. Rib-Eye Steak with creamy green peppercorn sauce, roasted vegetables and garlic-mashed potatoes. Again, the meat was quite juicy. I guess i have more confidence ordering steaks if departing from Singapore.
Stuffed as i was, i still had my cheeses, along with the lemon tart which is part of the course meal.
While i wasn't particularly hungry during the night, i asked for some butter shortbread cookies with milk #becauseican. It has become a habit for me to snack this way on long-haul biz flights. I ordered our breakfasts on BTC again because i really wanted to try the Nasi Lemak and boy it was a really good choice! We started with some bircher muesli.
When i ordered this for Jr (he said i could order anything i feel like trying), i was a bit worried about the fried chicken that comes with the rice. My fear was unfounded and the meat was still quite moist. The sambal was really something and it's easy to finish all the coconut-milk rice with the sambal prawns. There was also a piece of spiced otah (fish cake). This warrants a repeat order really.
For myself, i went with the Dim Sum Selection, which had some prawn and pork dumplings, as well as glutinous rice. The steamed radish cake was super delicious! I'll have to try the Bak Chor Mee Soup next time, as recommended by some of the other travel bloggers!
The non-stop Singapore Airlines A350 SQ388 was very comfortable and i really enjoyed the experience. I'll be checking out their premium economy on this route again and will report soon!
